ISA-112 Part 1: Building the Foundation for Modern SCADA Systems

SCADA systems rarely stay the same for long. New assets are connected, integrators change and documentation slowly moves in different directions. Over time, teams can spend more effort figuring out how the system is organized than improving how it operates.

The ANSI/ISA-112.00.01-2025, SCADA Systems – Part 1: SCADA Lifecycle, Diagrams and Terminology was developed to bring consistency to that process. It establishes common guidance for how SCADA systems are planned, documented and maintained so engineers, integrators and owners can work from the same structure.

In this presentation, attendees will learn how ISA-112 Part 1 helps simplify project scope, improve communication between teams and make system documentation easier to understand years after deployment.

Examples from water and wastewater utilities, pipeline operations, oil and gas facilities and electric utilities will illustrate how the standard supports both new systems and modernization efforts.
